Gear Checklist for Roller Hockey Goalies

Are you a roller hockey goalie? Are you thinking of buying roller hockey gear? If you recently started playing the sport or you have played ice hockey, you are probably unsure about what equipment you will need to play in goal. While lots of ice hockey gear can double up as roller hockey gear, roller hockey gear is slightly different. What’s more, while infield players use pretty much the same gear as goalkeepers, goalies gear is also slightly different.

So, before you head out to your local sports store and make a purchase you regret, in this post, we will explore the hockey gear you will need if you are to become a successful goalie. Ready? Let’s get started!

Roller Hockey Skates

The first thing you will need is a pair of inline hockey skates. While ice hockey skates are almost similar to roller hockey skates, the two skates are not quite the same.

Roller hockey skates consist of a boot fixed onto a chassis with wheels and metal bearings. On the other hand, ice hockey skates consist of a boot that has a blade and a blade holder. When shopping for skates, be careful to discern this key difference.

As a goalie, you will also want to look out for skates that are longer, wider, and flatter to offer you better stability when stopping shots.

Additionally, look out for skates that are lightweight, comfortable, and durable.

Finally, as a rule of thumb, get skates with tough wheels if you play on a surface such as concrete or asphalt. But, if you play on a softer surface like an indoor roller hockey rink, get skates with softer wheels. Typically, skates come with durometer ratings where you can check the hardness. But if you are uncertain, consult an expert.

Helmet

Another essential piece of gear you will need is a helmet. Roller hockey is a high-paced contact sport, and players are often at risk of colliding with one another or falling face first. While a helmet will not make you immune to head injuries, it can reduce your risk of suffering them.

If you have ice hockey equipment, do not worry about splurging cash on a new helmet. Your ice hockey helmet can be used for roller hockey too. But if you do not have a helmet, ensure you buy one. Ideally, get a new helmet that fits you perfectly to offer you extra safety.

Padded Shirt

While roller hockey is a contact sport, unlike ice hockey, the sport does not allow checking. As a result, many roller hockey players do not wear shoulder pads because they are heavy. Instead, most roller hockey players wear padded shirts. Padded shirts provide better aeration, mobility, and comfort than traditional shoulder pads. What’s more, they provide some protection too.

Leg Pads

If you are playing in goal, leg pads are essential since goalies are prone to injuring their knees and legs. If you have ice hockey leg pads, you can use them for roller hockey too. But if you are new to the sport, ensure you get leg pads that fit well.

Blocker

The blocker, also known as a waffle, is a specialized piece of gear worn by goalies. It is rectangular and is typically worn on the dominant hand. The blocker is mainly used to steer pucks away from the goal, but it is also used to hold the goal stick. If you are playing in goal, having a blocker is essential.

Trapper

The trapper, also known as a catch glove, is also a specialized piece of gear worn by goaltenders. Unlike the blocker, it is worn on the non-dominant hand and is used to catch and stop the puck from entering the goal. As a goaltender, you will need a trapper. Ideally, shop for one made of low-density foam for greater flexibility.

Stick

Last but not least, if you are playing in goal, you will need a hockey stick. As a goalie, look for a specialized stick with a wide shaft to increase your blocking surface. The ideal stick for you will also depend on the surface you are playing on. For a smooth surface, look for a composite stick. It will offer you excellent performance. But, if you will mostly play on rough surfaces such as asphalt, opt for a two-piece stick that will offer you better durability.
